About Us
The BCTC is a thriving and rapidly expanding organisation that represents the interests and needs of more than 50 businesses in the Broadstone area.

"The Chamber aims to further its members' business interests by providing focus for the promotion of Broadstone as a retail and business area. By acting as a representative for the business community in local issues, and providing a forum to discuss mattes of general interest."

We aim to do this by:
Raising the profile of Broadstone as an vibrant and active centre for retail shopping and for businesses to set up their offices, we do this by events such as the annual Christmas Parade and the Christmas lights.
Liaising with local businesses and residents on issues such as local planning, traffic, parking and crime prevention with a voice from a position of strength because of the number of members we have.

Keeping members informed of chamber activities by regular meetings; that are often atended by local councilors and the local MP Annette Brooke; published minutes and a quarterly news letter that is available in print as well as on the website.

Maintaining and increasing membership of the chamber.

History Of The Chamber

Our thanks to two long-standing supporters of the Chamber (both now retired), George Hattemore and Don Harris, for this potted history.

The Broadstone Chamber of Trade and Commerce celebrated its half-centenary in 2010.

1960 – 1963 The founding President was Alderman A B Haynes JP and with his brother he ran a pharmacy from a large double fronted house converted in to a shop. He was a prominent local politician and sometime Mayor of Poole.

1963 – 1965 The President was E W Diffey and his confectionery and Sunday paper business was located in what is now Franco's Italian restaurant in Station Approach. At this time the Chamber promoted a 'Miss Dorset' annual dance, the predecessor of the 'Miss Poole' event run by Poole Chamber of Trade.

1965 – 1966 F George was President for this year and he was the Manager of the local branch of the now long gone Malmesbury and Parsons dairy, now occupied by Broadstone Travel. Fred George was a 'happy larger than life' character and was the Chamber's first Father Christmas.

1967 – 1969 For this two year period, Alf Dennis was President and with his wife Stella ran a successful shoe business in the premises now used by Caesar's Bistro. This followed a period in which he had been in the footwear manufacturing trade and he had 'an unflappable and happy temperament' and was a mentor to other local business people.

1969 – 1970 Ken Senior, this year's President, ran a confectioner's business where Arrowedge Chemists now stands. Ill health caused an early retirement.

1970 - 1973 Don Harris remembers his Presidential year with a torchlight Christmas carol procession from The Broadway to Charborough Road Recreation Ground. Don was ably assisted by Harry Palmer.

1973 -1975 A two year Presidential period was enjoyed by J Soffe who was an agricultural and garden contractor operating from a site now occupied by the library and the medical surgery. John Soffe was 'one of life's natural comedians' with a great sense of humour throwing himself enthusiastically in to the Chamber's projects.

1975 - 1976 Dennis Gates, the President for this year, was an estate agent with an office in the Broadway.

1976 – 1978 Back to a two year Presidential period, Doug Wheeler was the principal of a firm of architects, located in the Broadway, in a shop now known as Broadstone Travel. Doug Wheeler continues to be a great supporter of the Chamber.

1978 – 1982 Unusually, Len Roberts experienced a four year period of Presidency during which time he ran a fruit and floristry business, and greatly enjoyed the social side of the Chamber.

1982 – 1985 George Hattemore is the President credited with keeping the Chamber going during a difficult period and it is good to see him continuing to support the Chamber by attending our events. At the time of joining the Chamber in 1970, George ran GJ Footwear at 218 the Broadway. This business continued until 2003.

1985 – 1987 Our first lady President was Carole McMinn and during her time BCTC tried a summer parade and fete. As it rained on this parade, it was unsuccessful and was not repeated.

1987 – 1989 Stuart Magnus became this year's President. In 2011 – 2012 he is Treasurer and still actively involved with the Christmas Parade.

1989 – 1990 The first President to be re-elected for a second term of office was Don Harris.

1990 – 1994 Next sees the re-appearance of George Hattemore for a massive four years .

1994 – 1995 C Burden

1995 – 1996 Nigel West the Chamber

1996 – 1997 Stephen J Spawforth

1997 - 2002 Adrian Jordan

2002 – 2004 David Allen

2004 – 2011 Taking the mantle for the longest period Is Vikki Slade, proprietor of Molly's, the catering business on the Broadway. Vikki has put her considerable energy and knowledge in to making the Chamber the strong voice of the business community in Broadstone. In her new capacity as a LibDem Councillor she assures us that Broadstone businesses will continue to be at the forefront of everything with which she is involved.

2011 – 2012 Emma Hamilton Cole is the current Chair, and a partner in Coles Miller, Solicitors.
